Labelling aligned equations in multi format (HTML & PDF) documents

Description

It would be very nice to be able to do the following:

I'm making an equation here:
\begin{align}
x &= a\\
  &= b.
\end{align} {#eq-eqname}

And later cross-referencing it here @eq-eqname.

My current workaround looks like this:

I'm making an equation here:
:::{.content-visible when-format="html"}
$$
\begin{align}
x &= a\\
  &= b.
\end{align}
$${#eq-eqname}
:::

:::{.content-visible when-format="pdf"}
\begin{align}\label{eq-eqname}
x &= a\\
  &= b.
\end{align}
:::

And later cross-referencing it here
[@eq-eqname]{.content-visible when-format="html"}[\autoref{eq-eqname}]{.content-visible when-format="pdf"}

Would it be possible to extend the labeling for equations to latex environments like align?

Perhaps some of the cases in that thread should be added to the documentation on cross-referencing equations. The thread is quite messy with multiple solutions and the original problem stated at the start was different to mine, so I originally discarded it as not related.

Opening multiple threads about the same thing won't make things happen and it's not just about "adding things to the documentation".
