My quarto website is not rendered properly when I publish it to gh-pages

Hi all! I'm not sure why, but my quarto website is not rendered properly:

It works fine when I publish it locally. Any ideas what went wrong?

What do you mean? How exactly are you publishing? What version of Quarto CLI are you using?

Sure.

The rendered version published online contains nothing but the header:

While the local version is rendered as expected

I tried to publish both manually and through github action:

Sorry, but again what does "manually" means? What command did you executed? In what context?
Have you tried Quarto 1.8 which is the latest stable version?

• By manually I mean just running: uv run quarto publish gh-pages from the command line.
• I'll try, but I don't think that's the issue.

But at least, you'll be running the same version as on your CI.

Because you are doing two rendering, one with quarto render and one with quarto publish.
You also are using quartodoc which adds a layer of complexity and it also renders the pages.
You are publishing to PyPi and to GitHub Pages in the same job, consider splitting in two. (https://github.com/uriahf/pseudostate/actions/runs/18555154037/job/53444197154)

Try locally to do exactly what you've set in your workflow.
Simplify your workflow to see what's wrong in it.

You've set an environment, is it needed? What did you set in it? Do you have it locally?

There is a tool which supports most of the GitHub Actions features to mimic the workflow locally, you can try that: https://github.com/nektos/act

In the end, I'm convinced the issue is in your workflow/environment.

Note: the page you see in your GitHub Pages is produced by Jekyll not Quarto. (The last GH Pages deployment: https://github.com/uriahf/pseudostate/actions/workflows/pages/pages-build-deployment)

Thanks for your help! The problem was in my repository’s Pages configuration: It was set to “GitHub Actions” instead of “Deploy from a branch”, so the site was being served from the default Pages workflow rather than the gh-pages branch generated by Quarto.

After switching the source to “Deploy from a branch → gh-pages (root)”, everything rendered perfectly!
