I'm trying to redefine the title.tex partial to allow for a titlehead metadata.

I think I redefined it properly (copied from the source at https://github.com/quarto-dev/quarto-cli/blob/main/src/resources/formats/pdf/pandoc/title.tex) and then linked to it in my metadata:

Whenever I try to run (Windows, Quarto 1.0.37) a preview/render, I get the error:

ERROR: The format pdf does not support providing any template partials.

Is this feature supported?

Yes it is supported- we use it extensively in quarto-journals and elsewhere. Can you provide a sample project that reproduces this error for us?

You can use partials as well. This _quarto.yml, for example, should work (and does when I test it locally):

It doesn't work for me, and it seems the problem is the pdf engine:

    pdf-engine: latexmk

If I use the default pdf-engine (don't specify) the error doesn't show. My book project requires latexmk because of the SVG files; it's the only engine that automagically gets them into the PDF.

That was a great clue, thank you! We were incorrectly configuring our PDF rendering when the engine was latexmk. I've opened a PR to fix this in our next pre-release build of v1.2.

Hello - today I installed quarto-1.2.237-win.msi and my build is broken, even before I tried to use the partial support. I think there's some kind of regression relating to how SVG files were working (the error seems to be about SVG now, whereas I've been successful to use SVG for months with latexmk).

Frankly, the templates support is less important than SVG support, at least in my book project. I can work around it by using template with a whole structure as I've done. My repo is at https://github.com/fuhrmanator/log210-ndc-quarto if you want to see the full project.

ETA: Reverting to 1.2.233 allows my project to build a PDF again.

Thanks I found the issue (it was a regression introduced by the change to support partials for latexmk). I was able to reproduce the error with your project and confirm that a fix I applied allows it to build successfully. It should be working as of 1.2.242.
