Is it possible to change the default figure/table caption?

Hi there!

Can one change the default Figure or Table caption behavior? For example, I need to write Fig. 1 instead of automatically generated Figure 1:. It is possible only if we label figure block in a wrong way, i.e.:

This is an example where I can use an in-text-link to @fig-example. However, I cannot link to @example-fig
