Image not rendering correctly in quarto preview

I have a png image stored locally on my computer. The image is fine, loads perfectly with image viewer, jupyter-notebook, etc but when I tried to include it in my qmd file, it fails to render. Here is how the rendered image looks like:

Also, I am using relative paths to display the image like ![Sample Image](../../images/cat.png)
Can anyone please point out the problem here?

It works if I put the image in the posts directory
