Needs the rmarkdown package for knitr engine?

When I run the quarto check all command with only R installed, it prompts me to install the rmarkdown package, but I am wondering if I need rmarkdown instead of knitr.
(I know knitr is included in the rmakdown package dependency, but just wanted to know the minimum requirements)

Upon rendering, I realized that actually the knitr package alone is insufficient.
However, installing the rmarkdown package on Linux seems to be quite painful, as it requires a large amount of time to build sass, which is a dependency of the rmakdown package....
