How do you continue a list item after display math?

I am trying to continue a list item after display math. The following does not work:

1. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit:
$$\sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{i}.$$
This line is *not* part of the list; if I try to indent with four spaces, it is shown as "pre" text instead of part of the list.

How can I get the list indentation level continued after the display math?

You need to indent with the indentation used to start the list item (in your case, 3 spaces)

1. Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit:
   $$\sum_{i=1}^{n} \frac{i}.$$
