ERROR: No inspectable targets with mermaid graphics

am trying to render to PDF with some mermaid graphics. I think this triggers Quarto to return ERROR: No inspectable targets with mermaid graphics

How can I avoid this? I tried to add to my pdf

but to no avail. I am on quarto 1.2.335, on Mac. I tried installing the quarto tools chromium, but that kept crashing...

Here it is - created from scratch:

• created a new quarto project:

% quarto create-project testproject

I altered the auto-generated testproject.qmd file into index.qmd ( needed for a book), attached (please, change extension to qmd, not allowed extension type here):

I should add that if I run the same quarto render after I installed chromium (using quarto tools intall chromium) I get this:

This is all on Mac M1, Ventura 13.2. I do have a chromium based browser install as standard ( Brave, using homebrew), so should not need this tool installed, but anyway.

If you get the .tar.gz file from our releases page, then extracting that to a separate directory should work (the quarto executable itself is bin/quarto).

I apologize, I missed the fact that you're trying to render to a PDF and not HTML. Yes, unfortunately this is currently disabled on the pre-release version. I hope we can get it fixed in the next 5-6 weeks ahead of the 1.3 release.

I do have a chromium based browser install as standard ( Brave, using homebrew), so should not need this tool installed, but anyway.

Unfortunately we need a precise version of Chromium because of the remote interface APIs. With that said, this is on our radar, and we will try to fix it soon.

OK, great. Will keep following this to see if the render to PDF is possible. One alternative 9 undesirable) would be to have a mechanism to show a related alt image/png. I am thinking this would be useful also for multimedia (I have some mov files, that break the render and I am not sure how to do this - a screen shot of the first frame would be ideal). Anyway, this is a separate discussion.

Our prerelease build is always at the top of https://github.com/quarto-dev/quarto-cli/releases and is currently 1.3.253. OK, I downgraded to the 1.2.253 release from the most recent 1.2.335, and that seems to enable the compilation including mermaid successfully!
I still get a chromium crash, but somehow the process continues, and completes ok.

@tomkom I believe this error has been reported in this issue #4653 and should now be fixed in vv1.3.253 or higher.
