But I think you'll get similar issues on many LTS linux distros.

the remaining failure is due to an ancient Freetype version on WebAssembly (old-rel)... That would be substantially more messy to fix. How problematic do you see this being?

Yes that will probably be hard to fix. Hopefully most WebR apps will be updated to R-4.5 soon.

it is super weird hove some symbols related to variable fonts are available but not all

Yes it is like a 10 year old version of Freetype, fortunately it was upgraded for the new toolchain: emscripten-core/emscripten#22585
