Is there a documented way for individuals / organisations to contribute to the sustainability of R-universe?

Thanks for your interest. As described in the docs, we are currently supported by R consortium and rOpenSci, which suffices for the time being.

Like for most OSS projects, the most important concern is the number people that are familiar with the code base that can help with future maintenance. I am hopeful this can grow naturally as more people use r-universe and find things they want to fix or improve, and that way get involved in the code base.
