[DropdownMenu] mouse click vs. enter key

I am trying to use NVDA reader and when I press enter with reader on, I don't see menu selecting the first item in the dropdown. It behaves very similar to mouse click where first item is not selected. But per ARIA - both mouse click and enter should be selecting the first item. Any suggestions or pointers why this behavior? enter works correctly when reader is not turned on.

Is there any way to select first item in the dropdown when trigger is mouse clicked?
