thumbnails are larger than uploaded files

They are converted to PNG, maybe that has something to do with it...

Something can be done about this?

They're kind of small already, so I'm not sure what would look good there. Maybe centering them on a colored background or something. As thumbnails they should definitely have a predictable size and ratio.
