Metadata dictionary passed to subscription consumer does not participate in session

I was surprised by this behavior - is it intentional?

var t = subscriptionWorker.Run(async batch =>
{
  using (var session = batch.OpenAsyncSession())
  {
	  foreach (var order in batch.Items)
	  {
		  var meta = order.Metadata;
		  
		  meta[Constants.Documents.Metadata.Refresh] = DateTime.UtcNow.AddHours(1);
	  }
  
	  await session.SaveChangesAsync(); // metadata change not saved
  }
});
