problems installing ruby 3.1.2

Figured out the problem. For me, the solution is to add this variable

$ echo 'export RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--with-openssl-dir=$(brew --prefix [email protected])"' >> ~/.zshrc

before this

$ echo 'if which rbenv > /dev/null; then eval "$(rbenv init -)"; fi' >> ~/.zshrc

in ~/.zshrc

Perhaps you should add entries for OpenSSL

I got permission issues after add those SSL exports.

I had same permission issue and I find my problem caused by difference in homebrew path between Intel Mac and Apple Silicon.
For example, openssl files are installed to /usr/local/opt/[email protected] On Intel Mac. but on Apple Silicon Mac, openssl files are installed to /opt/homebrew/opt/[email protected].
So if you want to use something from homebrew on Apple sillicon, you need to replace paths /usr/local/opt/ to /opt/homebrew/opt in Intel Mac settings.

Hi all, setting RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--with-openssl-dir=$(brew --prefix [email protected])" isn't applicable anymore for all Ruby versions, as Ruby versions >= 3.1 need OpenSSL 3 instead of OpenSSL 1.1.

Try installing openssl@3 using Homebrew, then:

RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--disable-install-doc --with-openssl-dir=$(brew --prefix openssl@3)" rbenv install 3.1.2

Configuring all these variables globally in every instance in your shell should not be required for simply compiling Ruby, and could cause problems with other software down the line. Instead, RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS should be used to configure Ruby with appropriate OpenSSL configuration.
