Bar Code or QRM Scanning #5

It would be great to have a mobile app tied to the database that could read bar codes or QRM codes. Scanning the code on the item would bring up information on the item, including its storage location, ownership, and any manuals or other instructions or restrictions.

Using bar codes to tag items would allow quick and easy identification of an item and what should be done with it.

In setting up the equipment database, we could adopt conventions to describe more specific storage locations where appropriate.

"CL BOX 01" would identify box #1 in the Circuit Lab, "HZ" would identify somewhere (unspecified) in the Hack Zone, "FL CAB 02-3" would identify the third shelf in the second cabinet in the Fiber Lab. These examples show three layers of location information, from "somewhere in the room" (which might be appropriate for a large item), to a container, to a more specific location in a container (e.g. shelf or drawer). Items with structured storage could be given more granularity. Studios could be labeled S1, etc.
