Instagram style mobile app tab routing

What would be the best approach to recreating the way instagram and many other mobile apps handle routing with their bottom navigation tabs.

For example:

On instagram when you click the Explore tab, you can keep clicking on pictures/profiles and continue going down a path of routes. When you click the Home tab, you can do the same thing. However, when you click back to the Explore tab, it will bring you back to where you left off, nested down in the pictures/profiles that you clicked. When you click the Explore tab again, you will be brought to the main Explore page.

It seems like each tab has its own history stack of routes. And only when you click the active tab again are you brought back to the main tab page.
