I propose the first 2-3 parts of http://www.datacarpentry.org/R-ecology-lesson/ (depending on timing) - see see PR #3.

Think it makes sense to focus on R or Python rather than shell or SQL as programming is more fun and less abstract for newcomers. Unfortunately I can't find estimated timings for the above - can anyone else spot them for the DC Ecology R lesson?
