Regarding the future of this project

I am considering using Revolt as the communication platform for my projects and personal gaming groups. However, I am concerned about a hypothetical scenario that I see no reason why it couldn't occur.

Imagine the following series of events happen:

1. Revolt grows to a point where other companies consider it real competition (a potential threat).
2. A company decides to attempt to buy the app first rather than competing.
3. The core contributors/developers of the project are offered a bag of money larger than any amount they could ever earn with donations or other revenue streams.
4. Those people agree to sell their copyright rights over the project, archive it, and no longer work on it and on any forks. Even if the project is licensed under an open-source license, a copyright owner can relicense their work to others any way they want.
5. The project name may get trademarked after the acquisition, if it is available.

Even if the community forked the project at that point, a problem platforms such as these have is user growth. Another scenario is that a new company is formed around the project and features get locked behind a paywall.

Notice that I am not accusing anyone here that's going to happen.

If I am mistaken, I would appreciate if my point of view could be corrected.
