Proposal: Allow merging voice and text channel into one common channel, not two separate channel types.
It should still be made so that the admin can disable one of these channel types, so when creating a channel you would simply show checkboxes (one being mandatory) instead of the current radio buttons:
This is one of the biggest failures of Discord, and it's one of the few things Slack does better. It works great in Slack with no complaints, while Discord servers often end up just having pointless duplicates of everything. For example, a gaming community might have:
#cs2
(text)#lol
(text)When it could literally be just two channels:
#lol
(text & voice)#cs2
(text & voice)Also what ended up happening with Discord is that they implemented text chat into their voice channels anyways due to how big of a failure this idea was, but now it's just objectively worse than their normal text channels. So now they have both text channels for text, and voice channels that also support text, just not as well as the original text channels.
This is still a backwards compatible change, as my proposal allows making either:
So any existing channels could be kept as-is, just publish this dual mode as a new option.
