Are there any plans for e2e encryption of DMs?

This project seems exciting. However, if there's no (backward-compatible with existing messages) E2E encryption by default for private messages, from certain thread model standpoints, I see little no no reason to consider using this.

I found only one discussion about encryption which received barely any comments and was closed.

This is a plan for the future, however backwards compatibility is not part of those plans. If you'd like an encrypted dm-only platform right now, apps like signal are available for use.
