Hi, thanks for the <ossia> implementation as of v6.0, really great! – Please consider this 2/4 metre scheme:

...would it be conceivable to avoid the free space in the original staff or is it a problem by principle of the MEI scheme (as it is with, e.g., MuseScore)?

Looks like bad encoding to me.
But this is mere speculation, as you didn't provide a minimal working example.

It may be the referred measure, but it's not a minimal working example.

And I suspect you would like the eigths to be aligned? And how would you like Verovio to expect that the first notes in both staves have actually the same length?
