Why these icons?

It's a really nice app, but I really don't get why anyone would use such icons:

Am I the only one blind here? All the icons look the same and there's no way for me to notice the difference between overcast and light drizzle, for example. Each time I have to hover the cursor over icons to see what they're about. It's really the weirdest icon selection I saw in weather apps in general.

These are the only free animated icons I could find.

Ah, I understand. I know you could find it less appealing, but I think there's nothing bad about having static icons instead (at least optionally) - as long as they're clear. Even the Microsoft's weather app uses those.
Now, even they're animated, you can't even notice the animations - so they're still worthless.
