xltabular in multi-column environment

It would be nice to use xltabular e.g. in a TUGboat paper. Perhaps the fix proposed by Frank Mittelbach for his unicodefonttable (FrankMittelbach/fmitex-unicodefonttable#7 (comment)) would work also for xltabular?

It makes no sense to use xltabular which allows pagebreaks, inside a figure* environment which doesn't allow a pagebreak. tabularx is sufficiant ...

Sorry, the link I gave was misleading :-(.
I have no intention to use it inside figure*, but to typeset two-column tables similar to those following glyph charts in the Unicode standard.

How it is relevant?
The new release of unicodefonttable solved my problem, but my feature request for xltabular is different:
