Switch action mode

Hi,

I am enjoying your firmware so much. It solved my delay issue that was driving me nuts.

Checking the documentation, I found the "Switch modes ON_OFF/OFF_ON/TOGGLE allowing to synchonize switch position with relay state" configuration but I am not sure on how it works. A little explanation would be appreciated.

I can answer this.

The first two modes are meant to be used with a classic switch (the one that stays in place after you push it).
Their benefit is that you will know the performed action when interacting with the switch even if the lightbulb is not in line of sight.
Their disadvantage is that they sometimes require 2 presses to toggle the light. Because the light can get out of sync with the switch if the light was controlled by another source.

TOGGLE mode can be used with either a classic switch or a momentary switch (the one that springs back up after you release it).
Its disadvantage is that you don't know what action happened when you press the button if you can not see the lightbulb. You can solve this with an indicator LED.
Another disadvantage: multiple classic switches in the same gang get confusing. Use momentary switches.

ON_OFF

• When the switch goes from the open position to the closed position: Turn ON the relay and send the ON command to bindings.
• When the switch goes from the closed position to the open position: Turn OFF the relay and send the OFF command to bindings.
• So, if used with a classic switch installed in the correct orientation: Press DOWN = ON, Press UP = OFF.
• If used with a classic switch installed upside down: Press DOWN = OFF, Press UP = ON.
• If the light is toggled an odd number of times by another source, the switch will be in the wrong position (not following the rule above). So pressing it once will get it to the correct position and not trigger any action. The second press will work normally.
• If used with a momentary switch: Press = ON, Release = nothing.
• If used with a momentary switch configured as a toggle switch: Press = ON, Release = OFF (Doorbell)

OFF_ON

• When the switch goes from the open position to the closed position: Turn OFF the relay and send the OFF command to bindings.
• When the switch goes from the closed position to the open position: Turn ON the relay and send the ON command to bindings.
• So, if used with a classic switch installed in the correct orientation: Press DOWN = OFF, Press UP = DOWN.
• If used with a classic switch installed upside down: Press DOWN = ON, Press UP = OFF.
• If the light is toggled an odd number of times by another source, the switch will be in the wrong position (not following the rule above). So pressing it once will get it to the correct position and not trigger any action. The second press will work normally.
• If used with a momentary switch: Press = OFF, Release = nothing.

TOGGLE_SIMPLE

• Any button press: TOGGLE relay and send TOGGLE command to bindings
• So, if used with a classic switch: Press DOWN = TOGGLE, Press UP = TOGGLE.
  Multiple classic switches in the same gang can get out of sync and have mirrored behaviour!
• If used with a momentary switch (configured as such): Press = TOGGLE, Release = nothing.
  If configured incorrectly (as a classic switch): Press = TOGGLE, Release = TOGGLE. Meaning interacting with it will just flash the lights.
  Multiple momentary switches will always be in the same position.
• Weird behaviour when bound to a light group:
  The TOGGLE command individually toggles all group members, instead of the group.
  To get around this, I created two new modes:
  Release v1.0.16 - TOGGLE_SMART switch action modes #59 (see the diagrams and discussion)

TOGGLE_SMART_SYNC

• TOGGLE the relay and set bindings to the same state as the relay.
• So any button press:
  If relay is OFF: Turn ON relay and send ON command to bindings.
  If relay is ON: Turn OFF relay and send OFF command to bindings.
• Multiple classic switches in the same gang can get out of sync and have mirrored behaviour!
• Does not make sense in detached mode!
• When toggling the bindings from another source, also toggle this relay so it stays in sync. (Add it to the group!)

TOGGLE_SMART_OPPOSITE

• TOGGLE the relay and set bindings to the opposite state to the relay.
• So any button press:
  If relay is OFF: Turn ON relay and send OFF command to bindings.
  If relay is ON: Turn OFF relay and send ON command to bindings.
• Multiple classic switches in the same gang can get out of sync and have mirrored behaviour!
• Does not make sense in detached mode!
• When toggling the bindings from another source, also toggle this relay so it stays in sync. (Add it to the group!)

Updated my answer for the doorbell use-case. It's like a bonus mode 😄.
If you want to use the switch as a doorbell (ON while holding down the button, OFF after releasing it):
Install a momentary switch, configure it as a toggle switch and use action mode ON_OFF.
