Unable Roger/Negative/Affirmative on CPDLC

Someone requested 10 mins AFK via free text CPDLC. When I tried to reply using "Affirmative" or "Roger" I got the prompt "Select downlink message first"

I had his message selected, but it wouldn't work. It might be that he sent it as free text, because I could respond to an altitude request and such.
