avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00

I'm getting the notorious not in sync error when trying to use this ISP sketch.  Everything is hooked up and configured properly, I can burn the bootloader and program my 328 successfully using the "old" ISP sketch that comes with the Arduino IDE, but it fails when I try to drop in this one.  Any ideas?
