Track R Translations Status

Background

Explain the motivation for your coding project. What problem would it solve?

What other R packages with similar functionality already exist? Why aren't they good enough?

Details of your coding project

The R project would like to create a dashboard that can help the R community quickly understand the status of translations currently achieved for the language. This dashboard will highlight the current status of translations and emphasize areas of need from volunteers in the community.

Two inspirational pieces (see links below) to help motivate what we have in mind are

  1. A now-defunct version of the dashboard (seen here archivally) and
  2. A similar site for GNOME Translation Teams (e.g. for Arabic Translation Team - Arabic).

The input data are the .po and .pot files for the development version of the R language (maintained on SVN; GitHub mirror here, e.g. here are the Italian translations of the tools package). These file types are associated with the gettext program. The potools package is available to help work with these files from R.

Expected impact

This project has the potential to become a central tool for exploring and understanding the translation status made for particular language. Many community developers, stakeholders and organizers who are looking for translations status for a particular language could have this tool as a starting point.

Planning diversity packages require data. This tool proposes to provide a global reporting on the translation status of messages in different languages used across world-wide community. This will also recognize the efforts of regional volunteers who spend a lot of time and effort to translate a message to a particular language.

This project hopes to build the framework for proper monitoring of the R translations status. It will also help to track what more efforts can be made to a particular language to increase its translated messages count and reduce its untranslated/fuzzy messages count.
