In latex, the tabular or tabular* environment is the content of the table without formatting and captions. Things like captions, font size, etc. are set outside the tabular environment, for example in the outer table environment here:
\begin{table}
\caption{Caption}
\label{tab:1}
\centering
\footnotesize
\begin{tabular}{ll}
\toprule
a & b \\
\bottomrule
\end{tabular}
\end{table}
I often want to have gt only give the tabular environment tex, without any of the formatting. My use case is to then invoke that gt-generated tables via Tex \input in my tex editor, so I can edit the formatting and captions in the tex editor (outside of R). That is, I want to eventually write something like
in my tex editor, where everything except the \input line is written "by hand".
This was my thinking in the initial comment #157 (comment), but the resulting PR #1588 with longtable seemed to address a different problem of floating position. Does the current gt allow for a tabular-only output?
