low fps?

however when i open the preview window in Hyperion via browser (phone), video playback seems very stuttery? like low fps capture

is that to be expected or am i doing something wrong?

Low FPS depends on many factors. I'm not entirely sure the preview mode is representative, but also this depends on things like what video source you use (which encoding, resolution), which hardware (is the backing frame buffer native resolution), your HDMI resolution, is this self compiled, is logging enabled. I have mostly relied on the compiler for performance optimizations, with a few hacks here and there to try speed things up.

It would probably be good if there were more diagnostic options, but at the very least you could try to use time ./drm-vc4-grabber --screenshot and see what the result of that is. Otherwise dump logs with -v. I'm not sure how much time I will have to look into this though.
