I was in a bit of a rush so I just replaced with tvdb for now, but my folder structure is

Dragon Ball Z (1989)/Specials/Dragon Ball Z - S00E01 - Dead Zone.mkv

Figured I'd leave a report on this issue either way

Thanks for reporting the issue. I have been working on dealing with seasons with an episode 0 recently, but have not looked into handling specials properly yet. I will look into adding proper support for them when I have time.

I have some unfortunate news, from what I can tell MyAnimeList doesn’t follow a consistent order like TheTVDB for Movies, Specials, and OVAs, and it’s also missing some types of information, such as Season Recaps and Episodic Specials. I could implement a similar order—placing Movies first, followed by the remaining Specials and OVAs—but not all the information that is needed is available to fully match TheTVDB.

In theory, it’s possible to map most of TheTVDB IDs to MyAnimeList IDs, but implementing that would take some time. Even then, any missing information such as some Episodic Specials on TheTVDB (e.g. https://www.thetvdb.com/series/dragon-ball-z/episodes/4543895) would simply remain missing. I believe there are many attempts at doing this and most are imperfect, such as https://github.com/Kometa-Team/Anime-IDs.

I will implement what I can for the time being, but with my current knowledge this issue may never be resolved. Furthermore, I will also add a toggle to ignore specials if anyone prefers to not allow potentially bad results.

I don't really know the internals of jellyfin, but could there maybe be a tvdb match first for specials then the myanimelist id is identified by that data? Though if the media is already organized and properly named it's a bit redundant

Maybe ignore S#E# for specials and try to match by name alone? Dragon Ball Z Dead Zone should probably give you the dead zone movie

Or just leaving tvdb handle the specials could work. Would that toggle for ignoring specials basically return blank and leave the next in line metadata agent handle it? For me that would solve it

Yes, this is possible and similar to what I was considering. I may explore this later for better accuracy. It won’t cover all missing information perfectly, but it should improve results where it works.

I looked into this, but it leaves room for user error. If MyAnimeList names something differently than, for example, TVDB, it can produce incorrect matches. This is essentially the approach I’m currently using for original anime name searches.

Yes, that’s the intended behavior of the toggle. You have 2 options for how to approach this. If you do not want to use this plugin for Episode Metadata. Jellyfin allows reordering of metadata downloaders.

Additionally, the toggle excludes specials from search results, while still allowing regular episode metadata and External IDs to populate correctly.

I released an update, Version 6.3.1 that includes the changes. To properly test if the changes are working, please make sure to have both checkboxes for ignore metadata enabled before replacing the metadata. The default behavior of the plugin is to use existing metadata to speed things up.

The current implementation is my attempt at mimicking what TheTVDB does without using TheTVDB IDs and only with MyAnimeList data.

I have released an update, Version 6.3.4, that allow using my mapping (https://github.com/ryandash/MyAnimeList-IDs-To-TVDB-IDs) between tvdb ids and myanimelist ids. It is not perfect and probably has some bad mappings, but I think this is more inline with what you are looking for.

Version 6.3.9.2 now includes some basic support for specials. For it to work the file should be formatted "Special name - S00E0#" in the season 0 or specials folder.

Version 6.4.0.0 now uses the format "Anime Name - S00E0# - Special Title" which is the common standard.
