Pint of Science India collaboration

Opening a public issue as a placeholder for our conversation on Zulip.

@malayajac and @Haleshot will coordinate with Pint of Science over email informally and see what they think about things like collaborations, partnerships, joint events, venue sharing for offline discussions, and whatever other ways we can do to get us a boost and get us building connections with researchers interested in open science, open source, open code, and open data.

@Schefflera-Arboricola and I will follow along on the sidelines, and then follow through with what gets discussed in that email thread and do the same for the Pint of View community as this is geographically closer for us.

Some pints points (:P)

• The lectures are paid, and they pay their speakers. We need to think about how we can set that up, perhaps as a one-off paid event from SciPy India.
• We will also need to ensure our (NF) Code of Conduct includes clauses or covers sufficient policies regarding alcohol and responsible inebriation, considering that the CoC was designed for professional settings and these events are conducted in informal settings.
• We also need to check age limits for attendees and local rules set by bars, and communicate that properly in our programming for any events.

A summary of updates for everyone to follow along:

• We decided not to interact with Pint of View. While they have a base in cities where existing volunteers reside, they are less oriented toward science lectures and more interested in lectures in general, and are also a for-profit initiative (as we see it), so we are not fundamentally aligned in that regard, as unfortunate as that is.
• We had a chat with Debarati and Saurabh from the Pint of Science India team last Tuesday about both a Pint of Science collaboration and a LIGO India one. The latter can be discussed in its own separate issue. The discussion was fruitful for both groups.
• @Haleshot has filled out their partnership form today for the May 2026 event after our discussion and review of their brochure. Thank you, Srihari!

Overall, a potential collaboration can be one or more of the following forms:

• Visibility partnerships (highly probable) – a symbiotic social media relationship
• Events in Hyderabad, Mumbai and Chennai as city coordinators (i.e., outside Delhi, Bangalore, and Pune)
• Coordinating with existing city coordinators for the festival
• One-off pre-festival events/lecture series in bars/cafes
• Perhaps taking over the "Tech Me Out" theme for the festival and turning it into a "scientific computing in bars" event
• Us highlighting charismatic speakers from our community calls and conference series who would be interested in bringing over their expertise to a lecture as part of the festival, and them highlighting speakers who can submit something to our conference's CFP when we open it
• We procure sponsorship deals from companies interested in Pint of Science, and then we receive something to help us with our own conference's planning

Let's wait to hear back from them before starting out. Overall, this seems like an early success! Thanks a ton, all, for joining the meeting the other day and discussing this in detail.

This is something we hope to do in-person at the PintofScience conf (or just even beforehand when they list their sponsors/companies on the website)? I hope we can also discuss this with Debarati beforehand re: this (if speaking with folks helping out PintofScience is fine with her).

Hmm, this should be beforehand – since I assume they (we) will need these deals to secure some funds for the festival's needs. I'm hoping to discuss this as well; I assume we're waiting on further communication from them after filling the form.
