Missing last row when I use soread()

Hi all, thank you very much for your hard work to make this package. It has been a great tool to do many things related to SO and R. Today, I would like to ask the following.

My issue is that, when I use soread(), I do not have all rows in R Console. I always miss the very last row. I wonder if this is happening just with my mac. I have been looking for information, but I have not found anything helpful yet. Can you guess what is going on? Thank you very much for taking your time.

Can you provide an example of what you were reading that caused this? Everything I'm testing seems to work out fine.

Thanks for your reply. For example, I copied the following from an SO question.

Original

ID Date Balance Date2 Balance2
1 01-01-2014 10000 01-02-2014 5000
2 01-01-2014 50000 01-02-2014 30000
3 01-01-2014 30000 01-02-2014 15000
4 01-01-2014 5000 01-02-2014 3500

Then, I typed soread() in R console. I saw the following.

soread()
data.frame “mydf” created in your workspace
ID Date Balance Date2 Balance2
1 1 01-01-2014 10000 01-02-2014 5000
2 2 01-01-2014 50000 01-02-2014 30000
3 3 01-01-2014 30000 01-02-2014 15000

As you see the last row is missing. The following is my spec.

MacBook Pro
R version 3.1.2 (2014-10-31)
Platform: x86_64-apple-darwin13.4.0 (64-bit)

Well, I'm not getting the problem on Windows. Does it happen on everything with more than one line? I think I have a solution in mind.

Here's the code for the clipboard reading on Mac, does the same thing happen:?

con <- pipe("pbpaste")
text <- readLines(con)
close(con)

Here is another example. I copied the following to the clipboard.

pressure temperature salinity
1 1 18 34.1

Then, I typed soread() in R Console.

soread()
data.frame “mydf” created in your workspace
[1] pressure temperature salinity
<0 rows> (or 0-length row.names)

With two lines, I am still missing the second line. The next experiment was done with one line. I used the following.

1 1 18 34.1

I copied this to the clipboard and types soread() in the console. This is what I saw.

soread()
Error in read.table(text = temp, header = header, stringsAsFactors = stringsAsFactors, :
no lines available in input

I am not sure what you wanted me to do with the code. I copied and pasted them to R Console and saw the following. I hope this is what you wanted to check.

con <- pipe("pbpaste")
text <- readLines(con)
close(con)
text
[1] "con <- pipe("pbpaste")" "text <- readLines(con)"
[3] "close(con)"

@Jazzurro I've looked into this a little bit because a recent update to RStudo seems to have messed up the behavior of soread.

It appears that you need to make sure that you select all the way to include the EOL in order for the data to be read correctly.

See the following GIF as an example.

The first time I selected, it doesn't capture the EOL, and so it only reads in the header. The second time, I make sure to extend my selection to capture the EOL, and it reads the file in properly.

I'll see if there's a more reliable fix.

NOTE: I'm using a slightly different version of the function since the same thing that affects RStudio on Ubuntu also seems to break the original "clipboard" behavior.

@Jazzurro How good are your Mac terminal skills? I asked a question on askubuntu and the solution was pretty simple. I needed to add a couple of lines with printf to the xclip output. In other words, something like:

pipe('printf "$(xclip -o clipboard)\n\n"')

I presume something similar might work with a Mac.

Hi sebastian, thanks for making the function available. I'm also using a Mac and encountered the same problem of missing the last row.

After copying some Excel cells, the following lines work perfectly:
con <- pipe("pbpaste")
text <- readLines(con)
close(con)
text

But, when running the following code, the last observation/row is missing:
Darwin={
con <- pipe("pbpaste")
text <- readLines(con)
close(con)
text}
Darwin
