When I check for updates in Craft CMS, the plugin 'craft-linkfield' indicates that it is no longer maintained, but its features are still working fine. Will this affect my site? If I upgrade to Craft CMS 5, will it still work, and if I deactivate this plugin, will its features still work?

You won't be able to upgrade to Craft 5.
But Craft 5.3 has a similar field type included by default.

We've been facing the same challenge with the now-unmaintained Typed Link Field module. As Craft 5.3 now provides a native Link Field, we decided to migrate to it.

Here’s how we approached it:

• While Typed Link Field does install and work on Craft 5, it’s no longer a sustainable option due to the lack of maintenance
• The Hyper module offers migrations from Typed Link Field, but we decided not to adopt Hyper.
• We upgraded to Craft 5 and migrated all other fields and settings first.
• We manually replaced each Typed Link Field with Craft’s native Link Field, copying over the configuration (ie. switching the field type in the backend). Since we only had around 10–15 fields, this was manageable without automation. Hyper’s migration would have automated this step if we had chosen to use it.
• To transfer the data, we used a custom migration (based on what Hyper does, see https://github.com/verbb/hyper/blob/craft-5/src/migrations/MigrateTypedLinkContent.php) to move content from the lenz_linkfield table to the elements_sites table, formatting it for the native Link Field.

Here’s the migration code we used (stored in migrations/m250102_202812_typed_link_field_to_craft_link_field.php). Feel free to adapt or refine it for your own needs:

• The migration iterates through all fields with the type of Craft’s native Link Field.
• For each field, it looks for a matching fieldId in the lenz_linkfield table.
• If a match is found, the data is converted to the native Link Field’s JSON format.
• During the process, we discovered many (partially) empty rows in the lenz_linkfield table. We skipped those rows. So far, we haven’t encountered any issues due to this.

It can certainly be improved, for example, I have just hard coded $nativeFieldSettings array based on what the CURRENT defaults are, rather than getting the actual defaults from craft\fields\Link, so if P&T tweak the defaults, this migration will be off.

This is also hot off the press, and we are just testing our various link field settings now to ensure the settings are migrated properly. If anybody finds any issues with this, please let me know.

I didn't have much luck converting the existing field settings so after running the migration you will need to edit each of the newly converted link fields in the CMS and change the settings as appropriate.

I finally got a chance to try this and have some confusion about the order of these steps. The safeUp method queries the fields to migrate, but if you've already changed the field type of the LinkFields before running the migration then how would $fields find them?

After a few ddev snapshot and ddev snapshot restore tries, the second migration script you shared worked for me so long as I didn't manually change the field types first.

Thanks for posting your migration script @croxton. I made a few tweaks for a project I'm working on where there are a lot of Custom link types in the Typed Link content that needed to be moved over. I added custom and tel to my $allowedTypes list.

Another tweak I made was to handle the migration in a first pass to migrate the field settings and then loop through all the native Link fields and check the lenz_linkfield table for rows matching these IDs.

I did this so that I can run the migration on my development machine to move the field settings and content, check that everything is working as expected and commit the new field settings via craft project-config/rebuild.

By splitting the migration into the two loops this script will still migrate the content on the other deployment targets when craft up is run because I'm checking for lenz_linkfield rows that are now native Link types whereas before the project config would have applied my new field types and there'd be no Typed Link Fields remaining. This is handy when trying to repeat the process for testing with:

Being able to use the single migration and not need to run a separate command on each server makes things easier for deployment.

Just as an alternative - I handled this a little differently as I wanted to be able to go through the site and compare fields to make sure all the link data was migrated correctly. For this I updated to Craft 5 and then created a native link field with the handle linkField and added it next to every instance of the Typed Link Field.

I then created the following controller with actions for listing out all the Typed Link fileds and a second action to migrate the data across. This lets you compare both fields against each other and make sure everything is correct!

Not 100% tested in all situations but its been working for me to migrate the link data over fairly simply :)

Rename the old fields' base handles and Titles first: Button / button -> Button Old / button_old etc.
Then add the new fields (native link field) with the previous handles: button

(Helpful: in the right sidebar on the field page, craft lists all Entry types that use said field.)

Run the migrate action again. Check the "errors" at the end.
Very fuzzy, but maybe helpful: the "skipped" block at the end.
Refine, repeat.

I just upgrade my Craft V3 to V5 and after quite a bit of back and forth and breakpoint regressions, I was able to get my Named Link Fields migrated over to Craft Native Link Field, including the content and settings. Ive had a play with it this morning and found a couple of things:

1: I had some trouble with the script looking for a content table in the database which didnt exist. Seems like this is maybe not present in Craft 5 anymore? I fixed it by replacing some lines in migrate_lenz_linkfield.php with:
