Current Behavior

A friend received my message two days late. They had the app open, but neither notifications nor the message arrived. I've also had messages from another friend arrive a day late — I had the app open, but neither the notification nor the message showed up until a day later. Is this a bug in the app, or a bug in the decentralized system?

Expected Behavior

Notifications arrive without opening the app. Messages are delivered immediately.

Are you using slow mode or fast mode?
The notifications do not show if you are on the homescreen or inside the conversation itself, this is the same as other messenging apps.
But you should be getting them otherwise, so if they don't show up at all they might be an issue.
Slow mode works by intermittently (every 15min, at best - which depends on your system. For example samsung or grapheneOS tend to aggressively block background work), so Session needs to be allowed to work in the background uninterrupted.

Yes, I’m using GrapheneOS and the Linux version of slow mode. My friends use the regular Android version and iOS slow mode.
The issue with notifications is clear now. Are undelivered messages and missing notifications caused by the same problem? For example, I sent a message, and my friend knew his app weren’t getting a notification, so they opened the app and waited for my message to arrive, but the message was delivered after two days.

There seem to be issues with GrapheneOS. App allowance in the background seems limited.
Maybe your friend didn't get the notification or message because it wasn't sent properly from the graphene phone.
It is hard to tell without any logs.
We will try to see if we can reproduce these issues on our end.
