What is a good approach to implementing a "backspace" or "reverse" feature?

Rewind starts the loop over from the beginning, but what would be a good approach to backing up a few characters?

A use case would be emulating the backspace button for typed text.

I have something unreleased for this, and it turned out to be far more complex than I expected because of all the cases I wanted to be able to handle. It's going to need a big new release with new docs, so thank you for your patience!
