How to use shadcn/ui the right way?

How do I use Shadcn/ui according to best practices? I have the following options and I'm not sure which one is the best:

1. I don't modify the code of the Shadcn/ui components directly, but instead create additional components, e.g. , ...
2. I modify the code of the Shadcn/ui components directly in the component code (Isn't there a problem with updateability here?)
3. I don't modify anything at all and try to do everything via the themes (but I need it to be highly customizable and need to make many changes).
