Win 11 / X3D cpu freeze

I didn't open this as an "issue" because it's not the tool's fault. I wonder if anyone else encountered this and maybe found a workaround...

This is a known issue in Path of Exile 2 too, with a 600+ pages thread of people complaining about the CPU hitting 100% utilization and then freezing with no way to recover other than shutting the power down to the PC. When it happens, the last playing sound keeps repeating until the power is off.

So it's no surprise the PoE devs weren't able to fix the bug, seeing how t can happen in other games too... Would love to hear from the D2R experience.

Has it just started happening recently? I did hear about a problematic Win11 patch impacting games a few weeks back. Can't remember the details though or where I read it (sorry that's not overly helpful haha)

Oh I've been having this for a long time, but it was only happening consistently in PoE2 when it launched 3-4 months ago, and when 8boxing D2R.

Do you have an FPS cap set on your instances so they're not all trying to use 100% GPU?

GPU-Z is a good program for GPU monitoring to see how much GPU compute you're using, you want to keep this under 90%

I guarantee you'll be using all of your VRAM, like I am in the screenshot. When VRAM is fully utilised system RAM will be borrowed, make sure that's not maxed out (I assume you have 64GB or more, 32GB will not work).

HWInfo64 is also good for system monitoring in general (CPU temps, check RAM speed etc).

I tested the main client with FPS locks set to 60, 100 and 144 but had a freeze in each.

For my 7 loader accounts they run with TinyMod and fps locked to 25.

I'll try monitoring performance next time. I've done this with Windows built in task manager but when the freeze happens everything froze including the performance monitor so it didn't show me any useful data.

Certainly pretty odd. My CPU is practically idle running 5 instances and I have an older model (5950x).
I assume you have an appropriate cooler for your model CPU.

Have you set your DOCP/EXPO profile in the BIOS for your memory to run at its rated speed?
How much memory do you have, I presume 64GB or more if you're running 8 instances?

Have you performed any overclocking (or adjusting curves)?
Are your windows settings set to Power Save mode or something like that?

Yeah, my CPU is the 7800x3D and it idles around 32c and rarely goes above 50c even during heavy gaming.

EXPO is enabled running at 6000MHz, but I tried disabling it too to use the default 4800MHz.

I'm running 64GB and thanks to TinyMod it only ever goes above 60% of total memory utilization even with all my other software running.

No overclocking/underclocking/undervolting of any kind.

I'm using the "Balanced" profile but I actually tweaked most of it's settings to be the same as Max Performance.

That all sounds pretty good. Is your Motherboard on the latest firmware?

Yeah I made sure to update BIOS and chipset drivers when I started encountering this issue.

I may have found a solution, 8-boxed D2R for a couple hours without any freeze (so far...)
I used https://mion.yosei.fi/BES/ to limit all my D2R clients -10%, not enough to impact performance at all, but might be just enough to not freeze.

Sounds interesting. Let me know how you get on. There's a plethora of people with performance issues at the moment, likely due to a recent Win11 update.

Sounds interesting (2). I had same issue especially with the latest Win11 update & D2R season 10.
In my case, the system freeze but i can "Move" the cursor. Meanwhile there is repeating of last sounds play.
I ran 3 multi box with 1 main with mod, 2 addtional with tiny mod in 5800h, 32GB ram, 3070 mobile 8GB vram.
Normally, the CPU / GPU usage is under 60% with ~60℃ temp but some times there are sudden spike of cpu usage or IO then the system freeze.
Anywayt, I will try out the BES solution and update here.

A lot of folk are saying they're moving from Win 11, 24H2 to 23H2 and having luck with that.

Thanks for this, only tried for an hour but so far no more annoying locking up with some repeating sound. Glad I check here, this is the exact problem I've been facing.
