Software pervades all parts of modern scientific research, including data analysis and inference as well as computational science.

What is the size of the problem? How many researchers are affected in the US. What is the impact on research funding? If known, what is the impact on research impact of software?

These are excellent questions from Neil. I'm not sure how to estimate size of the research population. And who counts as a researcher? Do trainees count?
