"Only allow signed certificates" not working for FTP

When using FTP as backup target the option "Only allow signed certificates" doesn't seem to do anything.
There is a self-signed certificate on the server - however a connection from BackitUp can't get established - the log always says "Error: unable to verify the first certificate". No difference is the options box is selected or not.
