Best Practices Question - Single Parameter Lights

Is there a suggested best practice for a non-official hue bulbs/devices, for example a on/off switch/relay? It seems that just sending R,G, or B to 0/255 will control the relay, however I of course get "attempting to set a state ___ on a light that does not support it" error - any danger/problem with doing this this way, or perhaps a feature request for different bulb profiles in setup?

As a followup, it appears that with these relay devices I can turn them on, but not back off.

If they're not RGB compatible, you can try using the --white option to control the white balance channels, sometimes it works better with non hue lights. Otherwise, there's no danger besides the error and nothing I can really fix on my side.
