Cannot see other devices (Fatal exception: main)

Warpinator can't see other devices on the network

In this case I only tested with one device pair (Warpinator Flatpak on Fedora 38 + Warpinator for Android on LineageOS 20 / Android 13), but the crash in the log tells me this is not a one-off issue.

Symptoms

The other device doesn't appear on my phone.
Warpinator on Fedora can see my phone, but repeteadly fails to connect.

Following the troubleshooting instructions here:

• Version is 1.6.1 from F-Droid
• Devices are on the same network
• Tried disabling the firewall on Fedora, but the problem persisted
• I don't know if and how the firewall works on Android
• I don't know about my router config, but the last point should clear that out
• The nc -zvu command did return successfully

• Launched Warpinator on Fedora
• Launched Warpinator on Android and waited for it to appear on Fedora
• Waited a bit more
• Clicked "rescan for devices"
• Waited for a bit, then quit the app

Thanks for the a detailed report and sorry for not responding in time. Not sure how I managed to forget about this issue for so long, maybe because I couldn't figure out what is going on.

First the thing I know: the crash is irrelevant to not seeing other devices, it restarted correctly right after. The crash simply happens on newer versions of Android (12+) when the app is launched from the background (shouldn't happen) or (more likely) starting the service takes too long. I will have to diagnose it at some point, but currently it doesn't happen too often.

Why it doesn't see the Linux device however I don't know. JmDNS is clearly running (no errors), the nc command succeeding means it is correctly bound and listening, it also correctly detects itself. Linux device detecting Android means the network is not an issue. My only guess is that Linux Warpinator has the wrong network interface selected (it listens for services on all of them but advertises itself only on the selected one). One diagnostic step would be to run avahi-browse -r _warpinator._tcp, which should give details about Warpinator instances being advertised on all network interfaces of the device where it is run. Then check that the IP addresses are what is expected.

This issue is so old I'd have to test again, might have been resolved since them.
I'm currently running a setup running a bit harsher of a firewall so i'd have to test with a normal configuration.
Currently using KDE connect so I may or may not have the time and will to test that again, I have other stuff to deal with currently.
My phone being kinda old (FP3) and running a custom ROM (LineageOS), I could see the issue coming from slow-starting services or just a quirk with my system at the time. Would have to test that out.
