Need guidance on how to run tests

I've forked the repo and added some features in the /src directory.
Following the contribution guidelines, I now want to write tests to verify my changes.
I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make the TestsExample submodule incorporate the changes I've done to the main module.

Minimal steps to reproduce my issue:

• Add an export to src/index.tsx. Let's say export const MYTESTEXPORT = 5
• Run npm run prepare to build the library. Verify changes are present in lib/commonjs/index.js
• Add a test to the TestsExample module (add Testxxx.tsx, change App.js to run the test)
• Import the newly added export in the test. import { MYTESTEXPORT } from 'react-native-screens'
• Run the test via npm run ios or npm run android
• Observe error: MYTESTEXPORT is undefined

TestsExample includes react-native-screens via "react-native-screens": "link:../" in package.json.
My understanding is that since this is a linked dependency, changes will automatically be included (after npm run prepare, of course).

What I've tried so far to no avail:

• npm unlink followed by npm link
• bump version of react-native-screens and run yarn install again
  • This is especially dubious, because vscode shows the old version when hovering over the dependency line in package.json, which seems to suggest something is out of sync?

I'd love to contribute to this project, please advise on how to resolve my issue :)

Figured it out.
I had to add my changes to the src/index.native.tsx file as well.
