This was working for me until recently. Now no matter what I always get this kind of result:

I was wondering about this too, but actually with regard to my own script I had been using for a while. I found this repo when I was searching around for other scripts, after encountering similar issues.

It appears that Cursor has simply stopped storing this data in the *.vscdb files where it was before.

I kind of jokingly thought to myself, "I wonder if this means our prompts are stored on their servers now," but after reviewing the current (and a few seemingly intermittent) schemas of the VSCDB database files, aside from some other oddities that might point to additional changes being underway, it seems like they are now storing the AI response portions of the chats somewhere non-local to the client; meanwhile, the actual human portions of the chats appear to be in a field called aiService.prompts.

Not sure how I feel about that - aside from annoyance that I can't export certain chats at the moment - but I guess the only thing that could realistically be done is to make a post on the forums and see if we can't get some kind of actual feature for this, because I can only imagine this is something that would be in high demand. And it's not like there is any real reason to prohibit this, nor would it be a challenge to implement either.

For that matter, I am curious to try launching the client offline or launching it with a transparent proxy in the middle and seeing if anything shows up. i got it to work but only for user messages, still cant get the ai messages.

Absolutely correct, once browsing either ".config/user/globalStorage" or ".config/user/workSpaceStorage" (I am on Debian) and opening the *.vscdb files, the key "‘workbench.panel.aichat.view.aichat.chatdata’" isn't there anymore. The assumption that it might be stored on cloud servers is a valid one. Might need to be checked with using Claude AI offline and seeing if any unexpected behaviour occurs.

Would be interested if anyone else has any information or fixes so I can easily scrape up the chat without using something stupid like Tesseract, or directly involving the GUI being used.

Absolutely correct, once browsing either ".config/user/globalStorage" or ".config/user/workSpaceStorage" (I am on Debian) and opening the *.vscdb files, the key "‘workbench.panel.aichat.view.aichat.chatdata’" isn't there anymore. The assumption that it might be stored on cloud servers is a valid one. Might need to be checked with using Claude AI offline and seeing if any unexpected behaviour occurs.

alright i saw someone mention an extension that could still find it, so i dumped the minified js into gemini pro and it found it lmao

its in cursorDiskKV in ~/.config/Cursor/User/globalStorage/state.vscdb

dumped that info to cursor and got it working after a few sessions of blindly spamming accept.

"we build a key using the active composer ID (something like "composerData:<composer_id>") and then execute a SQL query against the "cursorDiskKV" table in the global database (located in ~/.config/Cursor/User/globalStorage/state.vscdb). The JSON value that comes back from that key is parsed to extract the conversation messages."

Haha you beat me to it! I was going to post here some time soon, I literally discovered this like ... maybe 2 days ago by mistake; I am not sure if it's been there the whole time or what, but if so, I feel dumb because I definitely went searching more than once >_<

When I get some time I have been wanting to take the JSON, generate some models from it, do the same for other apps like ChatBox, ChatGPT, and... hm, I suppose that's it for me but at any rate, it would be sweet to take these and be able to load them in to ChatBox or another app and just jump into a conversation wherever. Shouldn't be too crazy hard to do.

So, maybe I was not looking in the global storage before, because those disk KV things were always empty. Hmmm.

Good work mate! Opened it up in DB Browser for SQLite, and see these "bubbleId" attached to some kind of 128bit UUID sessionID entries. I don't know what "bubble" refers to, I assume is a way to indicate a single prompt, not an entire conversation:

So exporting this to JSON you will get some specific prompt, including the code, but it will need to be formatted appropriately.

Warning, a day after upgrading to v1, I seem to have lost ALL local chat history - two years of it. I am not sure if v1 performed some kind of housekeeping or purging on existing chats, but I suspect that's what happened... I am still investigating... and furious!

are you on windows? did it open as Admin? sometimes restarting pc and reopening after that restart would "fix" it. i kept all of mine on linux. could also look inside the vscdb's if not and see if its there, or tht chat exporter ppl linked above
