Directional tiling support

Hello , i've looked around at the existing tile-sets and noticed there is no support for tile icon states being set by neighboring tiles. I would wish to take on the project but wish to ask if anyone else has started any work on such a feature and what possible incompatibility issues may arise from the map formatting changes / etc.
