Updating the media Collection with the latest media object

Hello geeks.
please help
am trying to retrieve a media object via the getFirstMedia() method and then update it to a new object.
a use case could be, you have a file media which you want to make some changes and then save the updated version that will replace the old file.
your help is highly appreciated thanks.
