Navigation status badge for expandable navigation items

Would it be possible to add a navigation status badge to expandable navigation items?

What you suggest does not look like valid yaml to me (but then my experience is a bit limited). I believe such a feature would need to be supported by MkDocs first before Material could then be changed to support rendering the result. Not sure what our chances would be to effect such a change. None of this would come about anytime soon, in any case. Are you sure you could not live with adding index pages?

Navigation status, icons, and everything that is front matter related can only be assigned to pages, not sections. Section index pages are kind of a hybrid here, as they allow for just that. What you could do is create a section index page and use the redirect.html template for it (currently undocumented, as we just added it, but we'll add template documentation soon). Something like:

Exactly as I mentioned. Just create an index page, as described in our docs, set the templates as above, set the location to the URL of the first page of the section and define the status as you wish.
