I want to use Chinese Traditional (Bopomofo) T9 IME on dumb phone, what should I do? Thanks

Well, let's start with the fact that I am completely unfamiliar with Bopomofo. I need a crash course.

I checked it out on Wikipedia and it looks like it is an alphabet where one character stands for one sound only. From this perspective it looks mostly straightforward. However, I've also installed Bopomofo in Gboard on my phone and tried typing something. It immediately converted the text to regular Chinese. So my first question is: how is it supposed to work? Do you want to type phonetically, only using the Bopomofo characters, or do you want them to convert to regular Chinese, similar to using Pinyin?

It is difficult for me to describe it in English, so I had to find a video to help people understand it. 😓
