Selected objects-selecting a layer

I am not understanding what the plus sign does for us. If you are in the layer search, you add click + and then on the left they will be accumulated as selected objects. Can those somehow be downloaded or added to the map? What is the functionality of this? If there is no function we should remove the + sign.

After you select the layers by clicking + you can create a map with those layers.
