What is the !extend keyword? (found in examples repo)

In the examples repo there is a line with !extend - a keyword which I cannot find in the dsl docs or via search engine...

workspace extends ../system-catalog.json {

    model {
        !extend podcast {
            webapp = container "Web Application"
            db = container "Database"

            webapp -> db "Reads from"
        }
    }

What does this keyword do? Is it deprecated or new? Maybe it is a version of the !ref keyword?

It's a new name for !ref (which hasn't been documented yet).
