How could the content be improved?

I'm remixing parts of this lesson. One of the things doing is writing more concise version of the first two sections of lesson 1 for my own purposes. Would you be interested in PR with such a change? I've read that maintainers are frequently looking for ways to claw back lesson time.

I saw a similar effort happened a few years ago #1028 . My goal with this change is roughly similar to @kairstenfay 's: cut down on the paragraph-format background information and stick to the essential context learners need to get started.
